Great Taste Awards is the world’s largest and most trusted food and drink awards so to see Symphonia No 1 Dry Gin and Symphonia No 2 Apple Gin on the 2019 star winners list is just phenomenal.
Ulrich is just catching his breath after a whirlwind of the last few weeks before taking to the road again this weekend to A Taste of Donegal Food and Drink Festival. First of all, we found out that our Symphonia No 1 Dry Gin won a silver medal in the International Wine and Spirits Competition scoring 93 points out of 100. Ulrich then travelled to London for the Telegraph Gin Experience in the magnificent grounds of the Hurlingham Club, which was fantastic, and, while he was there, he found out that Symphonia No 1 Dry Gin and Symphonia No 2 Apple Gin each won two stars in the Great Taste Awards.
What is not to love about that?
The Great Taste Awards are outstanding and this was our first year entering. It’s great to see so many other Northern Ireland based producers on the list too. The region really is already well established as a superb food and drink destination and we are delighted to be a part of the food and drink story.
There were over 500 Great Taste judges working in small teams and our two handcrafted Irish gins were two products among the 12,772 food and drink items which were critiqued during 65 days of judging which took place from March through to July.
The judges then awarded products either one, two or three stars to the products which they felt best deserved it. Judging took place at Guild HQ in Gillingham in Dorset and also at a judging venue near Borough Market in London.
In their response to tasting Symphonia No 1 Dry Gin, comments from one table of judges stated; “A punchy complex aroma. Takes you on an interesting well-judged journey that allows notes to feature other than juniper including waxy orange peel and citrus oils. Rounded, balances and easy to drink. Works very well with tonic.”
In their response to tasting Symphonia No 2 Apple Gin, comments from one table of judges included; “Attractive, rich gold colour. A sophisticated nose, a touchy spirit with notes of citrus and orris root. Its weight and the botanicals balance with the tart caramel apple notes and acidity. Cutting with tonic softens and rounds this gin.”
Putting your food or drink to the test with a panel of over 500 experts is a quick way to get honest, straightforward and impartial feedback from chefs, buyers, food writers and retailers so we are all thrilled to get two Great Taste Stars each for Symphonia No 1 Dry Gin and Symphonia No 2 Apple Gin won Two Stars.
Thank you to all of the judges and a huge congratulations to all of the other NI food and drink producers on their individual successes in the 2019 Great Taste Awards. It was certainly a great end to a great week for us.
But for now, we are getting ready for Donegal Town this weekend. See you there!
Our range of award winning gins can be purchased by bars, restaurants and hoteliers through Drinksology or Causeway Sales.
NOTES TO EDITOR:
- Symphonia is a range of handcrafted Irish spirits celebrating produce grown in the Irish countryside. The sophisticated Dry Gin is of exquisite complexity. The crisp Apple Gin is made using Co Armagh Bramley Apples and the Fruit Cup is a delicious summer fruit spirit drink. Symphonia is distilled at The Woodlab Distillery by Dr Ulrich Dyer who uses cold distillation to preserve flavours which are lost during traditional distillation.
